During the Assessment Phase of EBSM, the top priority for a Library Service will be to set up schedules that will get the catalogue into good shape and help clear shelves of stock that is not performing.
The EBSM Stock Removal Tools (Dead Stock Removal and Grubby Stock Removal) will be used heavily within this Phase to enable this, supported by the Stock Maintenance Tools to improve catalogue accuracy.
Schedules should therefore be created for these Tools to ensure that they are carried out in a planned manner. Without the use of planned schedules, a Library Service will run the very real risk of adopting EBSM on such an ad hoc basis that it will not be possible to deliver repeatable stock performance improvement across the Service.
That is not to suggest that unplanned ad-hoc use of other EBSM Tools cannot be carried out during this Phase - a Library Service should feel free to introduce any of the other tools (for example the Stock Demand and Stock Refresh Tools) at any time, on an experimental basis if necessary, if it has the capacity to do so.
The methodology generally recommends that a schedule should be looked upon as improvement for a collection, or a limited group of collections. Clearly a Library Service cannot address all of the stock on its shelves at the same time - collections that are seen to be the highest priority should be addressed first. However during this early Phase of EBSM, a Library Service may feel that it makes more sense to work across its full collection, or a very high level set of collections, particularly for activities such as Stock Check which are well suited to this.
As a guide (and it should be stressed that this is only a guide) the methodology therefore suggests that scheduling during this Phase could be as follows:
