The EBSM® Toolset

The EBSM Methodology revolves a core set of EBSM Tools, each of which create unique stock Action Plans for library staff which are geared towards achieving 2 key outcomes - Better Stock Quality and Better Stock Relevance.

This Toolset is used extensively within the methodology to drive performance improvements in line with targets that have been set at a local and system wide level.

The core EBSM Tools are arranged into five distinct groupings, known as EBSM Stages, which are arranged into a clear logical sequence as follows:

Seq. EBSM Stage Sequence Rationale
1 Stock Maintenance It is vitally important to get the catalogue into a state where the EBSM Toolset can operate most effectively
2 Stock Demand A primary concern is to ensure that for users that are currently visiting the Library, stock is available on shelves to meet popular demand. This will reduce as far as possible the problem of future lapsed users.

The Stock Demand Tools achieve the Outcome of Better Stock Relevance.

3 Stock Refresh The next concern is making sure that the Library Service is offering fresh stock that has not been seen by users before. The customer's perception will be of a dynamic service that does not stand still

4 Stock Removal Once the issues of Stock Demand and Refresh have been managed, the removal of Stock that is not moving or is in poor condition will increase the customer's general perception of the overall quality of stock provision.

5 Stock Purchase Finally, replenishing stock that has been removed or that is still underrepresented through evidence based purchasing will stock the balance of the library shelves with high quality, relevant books.
